Elijah Schwartz : Lampworking

In continuation of my pursuit towards higher levels of mastery in flame-worked or lamp-worked glass sculpture, and from a love of natural forms comes my newest genre of miniature sculptures : bugs.  My personal  gratification comes from the challenge of stretching the limits of this medium by continually adding new levels of detail and character, striving to achieve animation and emotion in an inanimate medium.

In my larger bug installations I use local wood and rock to display the insects bringing a "local living" feeling to the work.  In similar fashion the spiders are sold with a small assortment of “dead” fly wings, and whenever possible forms and positioning are chosen to show flow and movement.  The flies are 1 inch, the beetles 2-3 inches, the spiders 4-5 inches - and each piece is constructed completely hot in the torch using imported Italian glass, over a working and finishing period of two days.
